Cambodia Gambling Dens

There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel building that contains many comforts in addition to the casino, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
