Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of most borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
